Rivets?

Hopefully this isn't against the rules...

I know there are some Starcraft guys in the fine state of MI.

My question is do any of you guys have the tools and ability to install solid rivets?
Do you know of someone who does?

I want to remove my trim channel on the side of the boat, and then fill the holes with solid rivets. I want it to look factory that is why I want the solids. And I would rather someone else, with tools and experience do it, because I don't want to mess it up since it will be so cosmetic.

Any help appreciated.

Re: Rivets?

Therer are closed head rivits that you could instell. Use some 5200 sealer and just do it. Someone will answer in more detail Im sure.

Ya, I know. But since they are right on the side of the boat, and very visable I was hoping to produce a more factory look

Re: Rivets?

Post a picture, maybe we can find a threaded rivet that looks "factory". Dimensions might help too.

I'll post something later tonight. Basically just want them to look like any other rivet you would see in the side of the boat when looking from the outside.

Some of the closed head rivets I'v seen look just about like a bucked rivet

I thought I'd give my two cents
Go online to Aircraft Spruce of Canada and you will find every thing you need.
Buy a 4x rivet gun a couple heavy bucking bars,and a 3/16 rivet snap.
Hopefully we all have an air compressor.
You will need half pound of rivets. Look for AN470AD-6 rivets. -6 is the diameter and -6-5 would be
diameter and length. AN470AD-6-5 is a 3/16 rivet 5/16ths long. You may need -6-5,-6-6,-6-7.
A bucked rivet should be one and one half times the diameter of the hole.
Get some scrap metal and practice.
Get yourself some #10 drill bits 3/16 is not quite the same.
You can see a good rivet from a bad one on the inside of any aluminum boat.
If anyone is interested and it has not been done, maybe a video is in order.
Make sure the rivets you want to replace are the same size. (not all rivets are 3/16) if you use
1/8 rivets you will need a rivet snap for 1/8 rivets. (AN470AD-4 is a 1/8 rivet )
A dab of 5200 on the rivet tail stick it in the hole and squeeze the trigger. With someone on the inside
holding the bucking bar.
I hope this makes some sence.

Re: Rivets?

I myself wouldnt use AD rivets in salt water as they are alloyed with copper , try and find B rivets if thats the case otherwise Dave hit it right on the head

Re: Rivets?

Gnarly is right on, as AD rivets are not my first choice either.
They will out live me and most likely all of us even in salt water.
If you can find B rivets let me know and I'll order a couple ounces.
AD rivets are easy to get and I have every size right under my work bench.
If my boat lives in salt water I lather on the bottom paint as well.
Thanks Gnarly I can't get anything past you guys.

You know, if you don't mind posting a video I'd love to see it. I'm going to go ahead and get some of these and do this. I can always borrow the neighbors compressor and air hammer, and buy a bucking bar and some rivets.

Re: Rivets?

will try to post video in the next couple weeks
(still in production)
most rivets I believe are 3/16
so thats what we'll use.
any input or what you want to see
most likely riveting in a vice not on a starcraft

Air hammer and rivet gun are not the same thing... the air hammer will have a hard time smashing those rivets. And if you try too long they will work harden. I am an aircraft mechanic... we deal with rivets every day :) I wish I could help you out... I have all the required tooling in my toolbox right now.
