i have a 72 mercury 110 9.8 hp that will run for 5 seconds and die. good spark, plenty of fuel, found small amount of water in number one cylinder. first question is,, what gaskets need to be replaced to solve this problem? no head gasket just a water cover gasket by the plugs so do i need to remove exhaust covers and install new gaskets in that area or???? second question,, does this sound like what is causing it to die or do i have another problem to???? thanks for any help.

Re: 72 mercury 110 water in cyl 1

after getting no help here i went to anglers marine and they helped me out. i was told either water in fuel or a small hole in the cylinder wall from corrosion. after some checking i found water from the NEW fuel was trapped in the bottom of the motor and was getting transfered to #1 cylinder by the hose in the transfer port cover. dont know what it is called but i goes from the bottom of the block to the transfer port cover by # 1 cylinder intake port. this was causing water or light brown goo in only the one cylinder. i dried the engine out and still had a running problem. that turned out to be a faulty needle and seat that would flood the engine after about 15 to 20 seconds. after replacing that i now have a good running motor. maybe this can be helpfull to some one with the same symtoms.
