Recently acquired an 80 hp. Merc with no fire at plugs. On closer inspection found bad trigger wires. Replaced with new trigger and now have fire on all four plugs. Engine tries to start but will not. Any suggestion as where to go next. 80 hp. Merc serial 4836171. Thanks in advance

Welcome aboard, Heavy. Have you checked compression. If it's been sitting awhile the rings might be stuck/sticky.

Compression, spark, & fuel all timed perfectly. You have compression & spark now check your carbs - spray some fuel/oil mix down it's throat while trying to start, does it almost fire?
Probably need carbs cleaned or rebuilt. Then a sync and link your carb linkage to timing and that should get you going.
Good luck

Just to make something clear. Don't use starting fluid or ether. Only use fuel/oil mix as Ballymac said ^^^ There is no lubrication in starting fluid and tends to wash oil off the guts of the motor.

Also you may have to pump the fuel bulb each time you crank the motor. That;s the way mine was after a long lay-up. I got the first pop and had to squeeze the bulb some more before she finally kicked off after a few more pops.
