Hi, I have a '88 johnson 110hp motor that is hard to start cold. Once started, it keeps cutting off. It will stay on if I put it in gear, but idling it will soon cut off. My fishing buddy said it was burning rich. He said the oil mix is too much, but I told him about you guys and thought to run it by you first. I don't know how to adjust the oil mix, if that is the problem.
Thanks,
RFelton

No adjusting the oil-fuel mix.

Your carburetors are fouled. Needing rebuilds. Search this site for tips. Great info. here.

When that engine idles, the carb butterflys are closed. The fuel passes through special, small idle passages. They tend to accumulate dried fuel over the years, which will restrict those passages and cause the engine to idle poorly. You need to clean the carbs with some type of carb cleaner which will dissolve dried fuel, such as a Gumout type product. If you slightly advance the throttle, the carb butterflys open and start to draw fuel through the mid and high speed jets-that's why it starts to run better.
