adding a kill switch

Hi,
I have done most of the conversion of a 1994 Mercury 60HP from remote to tiller. (Here's an earlier thread: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=476124). The last part (that I know of right now) of the task is to add a kill switch. I have a generic normally-open kill switch, but I'm not sure how to splice it in. I guess the first question is: do I need a normally-open switch or a normally-closed switch? And second: how do I wire it in? For obvious reasons, I'd feel more comfortable with a 60HP tiller motor that's going to shut off if I get bounced out!

I got the kill switch (added lanyard switch) to work, but the way I added it caused the kill switch button on the end of the tiller to stop functioning. I would like both to work. Any thoughts?

If the switch is normally open(closed kills motor) then it should be added in parallel with the existing switch.
If the switch is normally closed (open kills motor)then it should be added in series with the existing switch.

Aha! It is a normally-open switch, and I had it in series. I'll try parallel tomorrow.
