Kind of, it's paid for, just not picked up until Wed @noon.....

1960 Glastron.jpg

Needs a floor & windshield, but is intact, has no odd/extra holes in the deck, hull or dash! Can't wait to dig in & work on it over the winter. Trying to source poly & glass out of Pittsburgh. Cleaning out a space in the garage for it tonight! Shopping online for parts & pieces. Don't tell the warden (wife :D) but I maybe more anxious then I was before the wedding. Of course, been together almost 20yrs, married for 9, so there were no wedding night surprises!

More pix to follow, pre-demo......

EDIT: so I can find this when I need to:

Select small engine repair

Select Marine/Boat motor

Scroll down & select manufacturer

Specific for your year & motor would be better, but in a pinch the combined is better then nothing

Wow. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out. My wife is about to run me off after 21 years over my project.
Good luck.

Yep, patience of Job that one.........

I actually forgot to mention that I found a 1960's Glastron ad that mentioned rear seats that were removable for use on the dock? Anybody got details about that????

Thanks & look forward to posting demo & progress photos

Now THAT's a cool boat! I love boats from the late 50's/early 60's where they were either trying to make them look like a jet plane or a car. It looks like it was sitting in somebody's barn for 30 years. Nice find!

Re: 1960 Glastron FireFlite has a new home!

Thanks. It has a bit of the finned look to it but not really, and I LOVE that it is unmolested & not hacked to pieces. Either to add stuff (radio) or a bad resto attempt. I actually fell into it after I quit hearing back from the owner of Crosby I was interested in. Went back through old postings I'd saved on evil-bay & CL. Gave up on the Crosby (I'd even ordered samples of DuraBak & Easypoxy for it [Cream & Burgundy], I was really interested in it), found this, bought it yesterday & finally got word the Crosby sold this past weekend. Seems as though it was meant to be. Then the FireFlite's current owner is headed this way from NY for the holidays & is bringing it down!! All for less then 65% of his evil-bay reserve, I owe him a dinner gift card somewhere....

Really looking forward to getting a "GOOD" surprise & have hope to find that it has the typical wood-free, 'glass only stringers. We'll see after the floor comes up!;) Also dig the motor, its supposed to be a runner, but now I find myself wanting a 1960 Merc 650 Keifer(??) 65hp I found close by. It's supposed to be a runner too.....We'll see how much rope the warden will give me......(for all my 'special' projects that would be the wife  ) Yeah the short bus kind too....

I'm also hoping someone can help me w/ a few details: It seems to be the only '60 FireFlite with the rib details on the bow, most are smooth, same for the side spears, they have ribbing/line details that I've not seen on any other FireFlites. Anybody know if those details are @ other models in 60, or other years then 60? I have looked but not very much. Also posted similar info on my ClassicGlastrons thread.

Gotta share the love w/ my peeps....... Assuming they'll have me.....

Re: 1960 Glastron FireFlite has a new home!

Hi jb,

I am constantly amazed at some of the coolest looking boats that come up on this site...

I am a total noob when it comes to anything boating, but I sure can appreciate a find like that FireFlite...that is one super rad looking craft you have aquired there, good sir.

Sort of reminds me of the old Chrysler Imperials from that era...

I really love all the details, the spears, the grooves on the foredeck, and those hump fins...ooooooooooooo, awesome, the bees knees for sure...

Oh yeah and that 35 Johnson Seahorse, way cool...I actually almost bought one of those when I was first looking to get into boating. Didn't even have a boat to put it on but I just thought it had great looking lines on it...

And all the old chrome cleats and steering wheel, with the Glastron logo on it, I hope you plan on restoring/rechroming them, because those are truelly special...:D

An old Kiekhafer would be a sweet number to hang on the back, too.

Permission to come aboard, 'cause I would like to tag along for the ride to see this one brought back to glory.

Best of luck,
GT1M

Re: 1960 Glastron FireFlite has a new home!

Permission to board granted to all who hail us from the dock, or afloat. Unexpected visitors should be forewarned: Joy rides & cruises have an adult frosty libation cover charge!:D

Please comment, and all advice is welcome.

Turn out there is only 1 of 2 Glastron cleats still in place. Port side at the stern. The other is remotely similar, but much thinner and no Glastron logo or detailing. Anyone have a source? I'll search through FiberGlassics & see if I can find the thread about a mold & re-popping it. So we'll see!

Have a great holiday weekend! And tomorrow we start pulling the deck/floor!;)

Re: 1960 Glastron FireFlite has a new home!

Well it looks like I'll probably do my best to clean the trim up & have them powder coated. I've got a Singer sewing machine base for a console table (I don't even know what that means, 'cause it ain't gonna have a console tv on it.... ) I just know that's what the warden called it. So it may not be too bad to add a few odds & ends to my order, 4 slat bases to support the ends of the bows holding up the boat cover, bow light, deck cleat(s) [still hope to get another!!], 2 Glastron script logos and the dash plaque. Singer base: black; Trim: Chrome

I managed to snap 1 of 2 back pins holding my Glastron dash emblem on.. Going to wait & go slow to remove Glastron script on rear 'quarter panels'

Ok now the good news: floor is so rotten it almost all comes up by hand! 3-6 inch strip at hull side, 12 inches at the stern (battery & gas tank tray) corners around main seat bases (still original base, new trashed seats) and a little extra glass & resin on top of stringers, but no PLY!

It appears to all be original, no repairs, even some tabbing under the bow deck (cardboard spacers to prevent hard spots (??)) that might look like a repair, exactly matches the tabbing @ the seam between upper & lower hull 1/2's! The all aluminum rub rail is through bolted, and bolt ends & nuts are buried in glass. The really didn't want it to come apart at the hull joint. So that will be an absolutely zero fun factor!

That attention to detail (and detail to trim) contrasts sharply with how aggressive a weave they left exposed on the inside across the floor & up to the gunnel. Floor deck is a smaller weave but the waffle still shows clearly under the white, gray & black deck flecking. The waffle print is also clearly visible on the exterior, but i think that may have been from sanding &/or repeatedly buffing the gelcoat over a long period....But it does make me think I may need to glass the interior at least once, even the chine seems to deflect easily, and it still has a little floor ribbing left attached. And the gel-coat on the topsides is toast, cracked way more then I thought, stress cracks at corners & attachments points. Photos will be shortly, let me know, maybe I am just overly concerned.

The hull joint at the transom isn't going to be a problem when I go to pull the topside off. The transom is GONE! But fiberglass skin is still intact so there shouldn't be any problems replacing transom. Just a bummer no patterns. Gotta go take a shower! Then maybe lunch, I'm hungry....

Re: 1960 Glastron FireFlite has a new home!

Use heavy builders paper or cardboard and a school compass to scribe the outline of your transom, then transfer to the plywood. Make it 1/4"shy all the way around so you can fillet in the edges.

Re: 1960 Glastron FireFlite has a new home!

Thanks, I'm not concerned with my ability to fit a transom, Cut in many a hardwood floor along river rock hearths, and scribbed many a lineal foot of oak trim to a variety of surfaces. I also figure I am way ahead not having to remove (!!!:)!!!!) the stringers, or replace them! I may drill some small weep holes in 1 or 2 in the back near the transom, and stand her on her tail on the trailer. There appears to be some chine & hull damage that might have let water into a stringer cavity or 2. Minor damage but I can just make out the back of the weave through the damage. Since I can & will have the floor out, I figure better check. Besides if I am low enough & far enough back, I'll be glassing over holes when I reinstall & tab in the transom:cool:

oops, I forgot to submit 3hrs ago...Duh!

JBC- Thanks for stopping by my thread and lending a hand to my current head-scratcher. I really love this boat you have picked up. Although I LOVE my boat, part of me wishes I would have gone for this vintage... This one will definitely turn heads when done.... (especially if you can get that matching/vintage o/b running well). Will be following along for sure and wish you the best of luck. It's going to be a long road... Be patient and most importantly -- HAVE FUN and the enjoy the ride.

Re: 1960 Glastron FireFlite has a new home!

The warden would LOVE IT if you could make me an offer I cannot refuse!:D:facepalm:
It is a much longer road then I originally intended, or was lead to believe by the seller. This was actually my 2nd choice, but the 1959 Crosby went 2 days before I could make it up to even see it. I really like that it has some really great detailing (LOVE the cleat, just wish it had a partner) and just enough flair to be considered a Big Fin boat. And that it didn't get hacked to pieces over the years. Being wood-free stringers is a nice bonus.
I'll have some photos up soon, real problems with the gel-coat, may have to glass skin most (all) of the deck:mad:

Am I over reacting to gelcoat cracks, do I need to glass over most or all of deck? This will come up again soon, I may want to shrink splashwell....But let's not get ahead of ourselves...
