Hi, i have an m40c which seems to be pumping a lot of water through the exhaust from start up, i have replaced the thermostat and gasket but i don't think the engine is getting up to temperature,i have not worked much with Tohatsu but have some experience with other engines which only pump through exhaust when the thermostat opens, any help would be appreciated.

That's normal. The stat just restricts flow through the head/block when the motor is cold. You can check for proper operating temp either with a cheap IR gun (from home depot, etc.), or with temp crayons.

I also question the amount of water that is coming out of the exhaust relief ports, I think on mine though it is not enough.
This engine does not have a indicator hose, does yours stream water?
Mine just sort of trickles out at a fast idle.
