johnson 50/35hp jet drive not running!!

hi i am new to the whole outboard engine deal but i bought a boat with a 1989 johnson jet drive outboard its 50hp on the head and 35 at the jet ....the thing will not run it will start for about 5 secounds and shut off it has good compression and i just cleaned the carbs real good and its doing the same thing..... any ideas??? vacum leaks? fuel? it will start but will not run or idle please help!! thanks

It sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me. Remove the fuel file from the carburetor and put the end in a jar. Squeeze the bulb and make sure the fuel flows easily. If notm then you have a fuel restriction issue. If fuel does flow nice and easy, with the end of the fuel line in a jar, start the motor and see if fuel pumps in. If you don't see fuel pumping in, then you likely have a bad fuel pump. It's an easy and inexpensive fix.

Thanks so much for the response! I have VRO disconnected could that mean anything?
