Hello,
I am new to this forum, but I need some help for my boat.
I have a 1987 Cole custom boat with a 350 mercrusier.
The shift cable just started giving me problems this year and now I can't push the button
in to rev the engine. where can I get a new one or is that what I need to do, replace it?
The one on it now is a quicksilver, any help would be appreciated.

Re: Shift cable

Are you referring to the upper cable or the lower one. You can get a new cable in any marine supply store or on line. You can buy a quicksilver or an after market. For the upper cable, you will need to know the approximate length from the shift lever to the engine. I'd suggest you first download manuals for your engine and drive and read the instructions for changing the cables. There have been some changes in the cables and the installation is slightly different from what you've got right now.

Re: Shift cable

Thanks littlebookworm,
The cables work okay I think, however the button won't push in to rev the engine.
it goes in gear okay, maybe I'm stating this wrong.

Re: Shift cable

Your talking about the button on the remote that releases the throttle from the shift mechanism. You need to look at the manualin detail before tearing into it. There is a retainer ring in there that comes loose that is probably what is wrong. Not hard to replace but study manual first.

Re: Shift cable

I think your problem has nothing to do with the shift cable. It sounds like your throttle only button is sticking, so it is a control problem. There is not a lot to go wrong there, it is a shaft and a ball that moves and disengages the shifting mechanism, and it probably just needs to be lubed after a mere 24 years LOL. Here is the module, 27 is the shaft 22-25 are the other moving parts http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...ng&inbr=1989&bnbr=40&bdesc=MODULAR+COMPONENTS Here is what I am guessing is your handle: http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...r=50&bdesc=REMOTE+CONTROL+ASSY+(W/POWER+TRIM) If you are adventurous, you could try taking the handle off (held on by setscrew underneath) and seeing if you can spray a little lube in there to free it up. Good luck

+ 1 for stony! But disconnect the cables at the engine first. Check adjustment befor reconnecting.

Control boxes need love too. Take it apart and lube it with white grease.
