shift linkage

I've got a 50 hp Johnson. I had to replace the forward/reverse cable. I've full speed in foward, but it goes into reverse and I only have idle speed? Any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

You might tell us the year of the motor. I presume it is a single lever throttle?

If you remove the cowling, and push the throttle handle back as far as it will go, do you see the carbs open? Does the timing advance?
