ok i just bought this motor and its hung in gear there is no buttons to push for forward nutral or reverse it is electric shift my control box just has a button to push for selecting reverse and a start and run lever i can get motor to start but the prop turns like its in gear no mater what i do to fix

The shift switch is in the control box run by the throttle lever.

ok thanks how hard is it to get a replacement part if need is it something that could jumped out of place and why is it stil allowed to start with lever in nutral and what would only let it start in run position instead of start

what gear oil does this particular lower unit use

Johnson/Evinrude Premium Blend Gearcase Oil. OR Type C gearcase oil (here at iboats).

It won't shift if there is no oil in the lower unit.

The shift switch in the control costs about $400---if you can even find one. You better do some proper troubleshooting before jumping to conclusions.

Carefully open control box and look for cherry switch on one side. Blue wire is reverse and green is neutral. Move arm towards front to activate reverse. Check continuity there and make some long jumpers and check from switch back to knife connectors on port side of engine near the rear. If all that is good then you may need to check solenoids in foot. Mine had corroded wires between foot and knife connectors.
