1986 Evinrude 50 horsepower water in cylinder
Hey all, I have a Evinrude 50 model #E50TLCDE.Here is what is going on, I am working on the motor for a friend at work. He brought it to me saying it will not idle or get on water, well I thought it was going to be the typical clogged up carbs, easy fix right, took off carbs and cleaned and soaked them, (wasn't really dirty to begin with), put them back on, started up and ran great in the yard, could just breathe on the key and it would fire up, and it would idle also, I thought heck yeah, lets take it to the lake for a test drive, well it didnt do good at the lake! It sounded like was only running on one cylinder half of the time and was shaking a sputtering and carrying on, all after it ran great at home, WITHOUT WATER for a minute or two MAX. I thought to take the plug wire off each cylinder to see if it made a difference, this is what I found out. While running in the water, I can take the top plug wire off and it makes a SLIGHT difference, barely noticeable, I can take the bottom plug wire off and the engine will almost immediately die, while the top plug wire is still attached of course. I began to wonder maybe coil or powerpack? i took it back home and ran it in a test tank, did the EXACT same thing, pull the top wire off still runs about thesame, pull bottom off dies. So i decide to pull the plugs out after running it for 5 -10 minutes, first thing I notice is the top plug doesnt burn my fingers when I unscrew it, but the bottom ones does, and I notice water on the top spark plug, so, I leave the top spark plug out, and start the engine, runs just like it did before with just one plug, hold my hand over the top plug hole, sure enough a LIGHT mist of water on the palm of my hand, I would assume what is happening is the top cylinder is getting more water than fuel and is pretty much a dead cylinder while running in the water. So I do a compression test thinking head gasket, top has 140, bottom has 135. So anyone have any ideas on what is going on? I have read other say it could be a exhaust plate gasket, the parts diagram is only showing one gasket, but this has 2 gaskets on it?
