just aquired 99 225 johnson, stator seems to be dripping a black goo onto timerbase, is this normal, is the stator going bad, could something be causing this, I'm guessing this is the 35 amp stator and must be running hot, if it has to be replaced are the CDI stators better then OEM they are much cheaper $249 compared to OEM at $340

Go with CDI as they have good products and a good customer service dept.

yeah I saw troubleshooting Docs on their web site, are there any draw backs to a CDI product are they better or worse then OEM, will they drip goo or do I have some other issue going on causing the STATOR to over heat and melt

I think CDI stators are as good as OEM. When you replace the stator, check the magnets in the flywheel, and the upper bearing housing bolts. They come loose.

thanks think I'm gonna go with the CDI Stator any issues with only replacing stator, and leaving rectifier OEM? what is causing this no melt is it just the natural heat! I did have 2 bad batteries that would not take a full charge only up to 8v

If something is melting, it is a sign of overheat.
Too big banks or shorted out batteries that makes the stator run at max output, will lead to over heating and melt down. As a rough rule, if charging batteries run down to 50% or less and capacity around 100+ Amp/hrs, charge one at a time. Hopefully your regulator has survived. If that too is shorted, you will burn down your new stator!!

Re: 99 225 stator issue???

I have replaced both Batteries, volt indicater on console is showing 14 volts when engine is running, but only if engine is away from Idle, 14 volts starts around 1k, I'm assuming this is telling me the stator is creating an A/C output and the Rect/Reg is still doing its job, if the stator was dripping this black goo, but still has an output can the engine still be ran untill I can get a new one! may take a month or so to get the $'s budgeted for the stator, just bought this boat back in sept, only had it out once that was for a test run after I reassembled engine due to a repaint! would like to get it offshore and snag a few Grouper before it gets to cold!

Usually when a stator gets hot enough to drip potting, the ignition charge coils aint far from failing. The bad battery's may have also damaged the rectifier/regulator, which can cause a nice little fire under the pack. You need to test R/R to ensure correct operation as 14volts at idle is high, usually it about 14 volts above 3500rpm

Re: 99 225 stator issue???

Many of us agree the CDI stators are far better then OEM. CDI does not use the 'potting' that encapsulates many OEM stators, believing the added insulation causes the OEM stators to run hotter, thus contributing to early failure.

As to whether to take your boat 'off-shore', that is a tough decision that you will have to make yourself. 'IF' the old stator fails, it could ruin your whole day, or worse. Having replaced the bad batteries that probably contributed to the stator overheat can help extend the stator lifetime, BUT, the fact that the stator has already been overheated to the extent that it was melting the potting, isn't a good thing.

There is NO degree of certainty how long the old stator will last, which is cause to err on the side of safety.

Most of us would highly recommend you replace the stator before any off-shore running.

I'm agreeing, safety and reliablility out way my wants & needs of my impatient self the off shore trip will have to wait, any Idea's on how to test the rect/reg
