3hp Lightwin Ignition Timing

Hello.

Working on a 63 evinrude lightwin. I have purchased all new electrical components and am in the process of fine tuning the spark timing. I am using Tom Old Evninrude site (great resource) and am doing the ohm meter timing trick rather than the .020 feeler gauge.
Anyway my question is as follows. No where on his site does it say where the throttle position should be when setting this way. I believe this would be a rather important piece of info as the lever advances the timing too. I have an old service manual and it states when using the special timing light tool available that the throttle lever should be in the position where the leading edge of the cam follower just starts to touch the throttle advancer.
Can someone please confirm this?

Throttle position makes NO difference when setting the points. Try it and you will see.

The reference to the cam follower is a completely different subject.

Re: 3hp Lightwin Ignition Timing

Thanks for the quick responses..I'm still a bit confused to why the throttle position would not make a difference. I havent tried it yet, but logic tells me that if I were to use the ohmmeter method when the throttle is set to the off position and the stator plate would be in a much different position than what it would be if at full throttle. I would assume that the points would open at different times in relation to each other (off vs full) which would change when I get an infinite ohm reading (opening of points) in relation to the flywheel notches. maybe this complication is why it's just easiest to put a feeler gauge in at 020 and be done with it.

set the points at 020 , thats the point gap for your motor. ...the critical thing is having the points open at the top of the lobe to specs.

Re: 3hp Lightwin Ignition Timing

I just figured it out. My logic would be true if the marks were not on the stator and on something static. since the marks on on the stator they are moving in relation to everything so that's why it doesn't matter. Anyway since Im here I am trying to figure out why I can't get this motor to run very slowly. guys tell me these motors can get right down in RPMs for really slow trolling but mine cant. I thought it was ignition for sure as I check, rebuilt, cleaned, replaced everything having to do with fuel delivery. Compression 85 in both cylinders which seems pretty good. Help needed.

If it's not idling right, it's usually a carb issue. Did you clean/rebuild the carb, and did you remove the welch plug on top of the carb and clean the idle circuit beneath it?

Re: 3hp Lightwin Ignition Timing

You are on one "correct" course....use the timing marks. I recently made an idiot of myself by setting the gap instead of using the timing marks. I should know better since I make those timing fixtures. Anyhoo, I wasted untold hours trying to get a good idle, and finally went in and used the timing fixture. The result was unbelievable. It now ticks them off like a fine watch. Your results may vary.

Throttle cam synch is also very important.

Re: 3hp Lightwin Ignition Timing

according to service man to sync the throttle cam I must move the lever until the edge of the cam touches the centre of the follower and at that point it should just start moving the collier. I hope this is correct? I have read in other posts about marks on the cam, but are no such marks and I think that is for later models. Just looking for input and clarification.
