Reed valves are the intake valves for the respective cylinder(s). If they don't open, then the cylinder "free wheels" so to speak....nuttin nuttin out. I never had one go bad, but I have read numerous times on there that if they fail the fail by one or more of the reeds break off.
When the piston starts the intake stroke it moves down the cylinder creating vacuum which sucks fuel/air into it. It then compresses the mixture, the plug fires, the mixture explodes, the exhaust ports uncover, the boom blows out the exhaust, the intake ports are opened as the exhaust are closed and the process repeats. Don't see a correlation personally to answer your question.
