I am new to boating and just got an Evinrude 9.5 made in 65'. Are there any special additives such as lead substitute that should be added to the fuel?

I haven't heard of any. You could use octane booster, but it wouldn't do anything to benefit. You're just as well to use the standard regular fuel in it. Mix your fuel at 50:1 and you're good to go.

50 years ago, people went out of their way and paid extra to get unleaded "marine white" gas. Now it is at the corner gas station, called "regular unleaded".

As for the ethanol (not methanol), that is a subject that will stir up too many emotions.

Thanks for the info. I used to be a mechanic and I remember when they took out the lead many cars had problems with the valve seats. The lead lubricated them and when unleaded became the only fuel available the valve seats were hardened to make up for this. Guess it dosen't matter with 2 cycle.

I use Marine Stabil to hopefully offset the 10% ethnol.

I remember back in the fifties and sixties, at the resorts we went to, they sold white gas which was unleaded fuel,my uncle had a mercury 40hp and it required white gas to inhibit spark plug fouling.

Yea, I can see your point here. The old type leaded gas would be more apt to foul out plugs. The newer unleaded should run cleaner.

Used in Coleman stoves and lanterns too.

You want to make sure your fuel lines on the motor, plus the float, is ethanol tolerant. That means changing them if they haven't been changed recently to such.
