We are working on a 15 hp Johnson motor with an electric start. We need to remove the starter but the flywheel will not let us remove one of the mounting bolts. Do you need to remove the flywheel to take out the starter?
We bought this boat last week and have no idea how old the motor is. It looks like it is late 1980 something.
When we press the start button it has no power. We checked the power and it makes it to the start switch which is located on the front left side of the motor when you are facing towards the end of the boat.
Try running direct juice to the starter from the battery, before you remove it. It may not be the starter. Possibly, you could have a wiring issue or a solenoid issue.
When you press the start button does the other contact on the button show 12+ volts; if not you have a start button issue. These are 60 amp buttons available from Auto Zone, Advance auto or O'riellys. They fit nicely in the hole and are water proof. If you have power on the other contact; then you have a wiring or starter issue. Good luck!
