I recently bought a 1996 yamaha 50hp four stroke outboard and have had numerous problems with it. The most recent is an extremley high idle randomly. It will be at a normal idle speed at a little less than 1000 rpm and randomly will jump up to 3000 and hold there. It dosnt allways happen but on average about every other trip it does. However when it does go wild i kill the engine and start it and put it into gear before it has a chance to rev up and it behaves normal under load. Any suggestions, ideas, answers?

Re: yamaha idle problem. HELP

3000 rpms are pretty high AT IDLE. Throttle plates might not be closing properly. Check your linkage settings. Follow the instructions in your yamaha service manual First check where your throttle cable connects at your engine. Then check for idle linkage setting, WOT setting, Vacuum settings and dash pot settings. Good luck.
