Well, I have a 1986 maybe 20hp mariner tiller, long shaft with a weird serial # 6633973. Anyway never really had problems until I had out the last time. Only the
top plug had spark, moved the wires around on the coil packs and find out the coils are fine. I see a few ways to test the stator, trigger, and switch box, with a
DVA and a meter, but idont have a DVA, Iam wondering if there is another way, most of these tests are for 3 or more cylinders, and these tests for 3 cylinder or
more motors state: OUTBOARD ELECTRICAL & IGNITION TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS
1. Intermittent, weak, or no spark output at two spark plugs usually indicates a bad TRIGGER.
2. Intermittent, weak, or no spark output at all three spark plugs usually indicates a bad STATOR or SWITCH BOX.
3. Intermittent, weak, or no spark at any one spark plug usually indicates a bad SPARK PLUG, COIL, or SWITCH BOX.
or i found this from cdi when looking for a switch box on ebay, and im not to excited about it at all
WARNING! If the old pack fired only one cylinder, remove the flywheel and check the magnets to see if they are loose.
and that warning came from the part # on my switch box
