i make it easy on myself. i just use mercruiser high performance gear lub +. best i know. this type gear lub covers most all recreational mercruiser drives.
as for winterizing. getting the water out is the main thing. if ya wanna know what mercruiser says about winterizing your engine. click here and check out the service manual that covers your engine. 1,2,4, or six i'd think. look for the section on winterizing or laying up your engine.
or
go here and check out #6.

Ayuh,.... Ya missed 1, there should be 2...
1 on the block, 'n 1 above it, on the bottom of the manifold...
Might have 1 on the aft corner of the riser too...
'n don't forget to pull the Big hose off the circulating water pump,...
It's hidin' 'bout a quart or so...

Yer drive needs 2 qt.s to fill,... you'll have alittle left over...

You've done it now...the dreaded "W" word.

You'll get as many answers as posters. From "just follow the manual verbatim" to "this may be unorthodox but has worked for me".

ENSURING ALL OF THE WATER IS REMOVED IS IMPERATIVE. Then the whole "air-v-antifreeze" storage debate can start from there. As for lube...as long as it is rated for marine use...use it. People here use anything from Merc to Mobil 1 to "whatever's on sale" 75 or 80 /90 with success.

How about draining the manifold and elbow? And I'd remove the main hose odd the water pump and drop the water out of there as well... Lots of little nooks and crannies water can lie in...

For those drives any good quality 90 weight gear oil is ok, but I also prefer Quicksilver High Performance...

The drive can use any xxW-90 gear lube rated for marine use. You must pump it from the lower hole up to the top hole. USe a fine wire to ream out the drain on the engine block and manifold to make certain the water is out.

I have a inline 6 160 HP basically the same thing you have with a pre-alpha drive. I did a bunch of research and read quite a few studies on different gear oils. I decided to go with Lucas 90w. It has so far been the best. Out of the water the outdrive is quieter than I have ever heard it and it seems to shift tighter. That being said, Lucas failed miserably with their oil additives. I have used many different types of outdrive oils and the Lucas heavy duty 90w seems to be the best performing IMO. Quiet and tight.

I have the same motor, I pull 2 plugs on the exhaust manifold, the petcock on the engine and 1 remaining plug on the exhaust elbow. I also pull hoses from water pump and thermostat and add 1/2 gallon of marine/RV antifreeze just for peice of mind. Another must should be to double check all your drains by running a small peice of wire or paper clip in and out of all drain ports!! Sand/Silt builds up there and will sometimes plug these drains and it only takes once to learn and valuable and expesive lesson. Give it try to ensure ALL water is drained...Great motor by the way..
