how to pull codes/information?

Hey guys,

We have a 1997 Albemarle that has the twin Volvo Penta/Ford 5.8L motors. The motors were built in 1995 (pre ODBII). I have a code scanner (I'm a mechanic, so its used in my auto shop) and used it with the Ford plug, however I couldn't pull any info. Is there any reason that marine motors would be different. Is there anyway to pull up the codes on the motors.

I ask because I've been having a problem with my port side motor. For some off reason it won't rev above 3k RPMS with a load. In neutral it will, but in gear the the starboard side with do its 3600-3800RPMS while the port will hover around 2900-3000RPMS at WOT.

Any help would be appreaciated!!

Ok, I managed to pull the codes.

I have a code 12. I also have a code 18 (tach input). Code 12 popped up on both motors (temp related, so I think it was just from not being warmed up). However, the code 18 baffles me. What could it be and how do I diagnose it?
