Your carb butterflys may be open slightly,causing your high idle when starting. Pull the airbox cover off the front of the carbs. Check to make sure the carb linkage is permitting the carb butterflys to completely close at idle. Your engine may idle at 1200+ on the trailer. That's normal. You may have to disconnect the throttle cable at the engine end to free up the engine's linkage so that it will return full to the normal idle settings. Also, you will find very high rpm's on the engine when running on the trailer. It's a different story when the engine's exhaust is buried under 2 feet of water.
