Ayuh,.... Usually ya need to remove enough of the Boat to get down there...

I use a snap-on belt type filter wrench for oil filters on most everything I change oil on....
I also use Baggies freezer bags, in boats anyways....
Crack the filter loose, 'n pull the wrench out, then slip a baggie up around it, 'n spin it off...
It drops into the baggie, 'n ya save cleanin' up the spillage...

Remember, yer lookin' at it upside-down, so turn it backwards to loosen it....

Re: Removing oil filter

I like the metallic cup type of oil filter removal tool the best. Can use a 3/8" ratchet; and they grip the filter at the end (where it's stronger) and where they usually have flats (or dimples). Tools that grip (or squeeze) in the middle of the filter can start to crush it, and then you can really have a nasty little problem.
Just don't overtighten with the cup-type tool, it's easy to do since you have a good lever arm with the wrench handle.

I like oil filter pliers, work much better than band wrenchs if filter is over tight.

I like this one with ratchet. I will try it. The problem is I can't reach the filter with my hand. The ratchet will extend my arm.

Thanks

Re: Removing oil filter

The oil filter pliers from harbor freight are like $5 and work great. I end up using them to remove old sprinklers in my yard too... best $5 spent.
