What all is involved in replacing the metal of the strut and the lower set screws in

the boat bottom? My shaftlog separated from the fiberglass this summer. We were able to dry the stern bearing area out and reglass but could not dry the shaftlog area where the shaft emerges under the fishhold. So we stuffed it full of bathtowels by beating them in with a screwdriver and hammer and fished. Were able to keep up with the slow leak in this fashion.

My fiberglass man said to replace all the underneath metal, pull the shaft, and he would reglass everything. How do I begin to remove the metal??? What does the underlying support skeleton of the boat look like? The metal is pitting and even the set screws in the back are so corroded that it would be nearly impossible to turn them. Where do I start???? How much should get removed??? Does the strut continue underneath the entire 33' fishing vessel?

i'm placing my bet on this being an inboard boat. would be best if you could give some more details and confirm that.

how have you seen the set screws, is it on a trailer? a lift?

Yep, would need a good bit more information. What kind of boat (who built her, & what model), also any pictures of her bottom & if you have any pics of the shaft log area that you are having problems with. - Why does he say to "replace all the underneith metal"? Unless there are real issues the shaft & strut should outlast the boat. Are they damaged, or do you have some bad stray current corrosion issues going on? There are all sorts of differnet kinds of struts depending on the type of bottom that the boat has, so without some more information comments are really just guess work.
