165hp IDLES BUT CANT GIVE GAS

Got a 165hp inline 6 that recently started giving me problems.i was out pulling my son on a tube when i went to take off it died .started right up but if i give throttle it dies.if i feathered the throttle back and forth i got it to take off and run for as long as i want as long as i dont let it return to idle then try to reaccelerate.i took carb apart alllooks ok.float needle seat all new.acc pump looks new and white with blue oring on bottom looks new didnt replace.any thoughts on this?now trying to feather the gas no longer works.i idled back to the dock with my 10 year old pretty bummed he got to tube for ten minutes.it will start right up and idle all dayjust cant give it any gas

Does the accelerator pump squirt out 2 streams of gas into the carb when you open the throttle?

Time to start with the basics. When was the last full tuneup, including a compression test, checking the dwell, setting the timing and then checking the advance timing?

i replaced points and gapped at 16 didnt set dwell.did cap rotor and plugs too.ohh and i retimed it to 8degrees my voltmeter has dwell ive never used it figured setting with feeler gauge would be close enough to rev and run

Hmmmmmm.... I guess the answer to the original question is to get the known issues figured out and fixed, THEN you worry about hesitation problems.

Have you checked to see if the shift interrupt may be engaging and killing the engine? That may be the cause, and not a carb problem. Just a simple thing to check and eliminate as a cause.
