I searched the forums for two hours before asking these questions, hope they are not repeats.
What is the letter at the end of the serial number on a 1968 Evinrude 18hp?
I have two engines that are 1968 18hp but one serial number ends with A and the other ends with M.
Engine #1> 18802A-E02640
Engine #2> 18802M-E10348
Also, what does the letter and numbers after the dash mean?

It means there was a mid-year engineering change is some part. Doesn't mean a thing, unless you happen to need to order that affected part. In that case, the parts book will tell you which one you need. If you really want to know what part was changed, study the parts book.

EDIT: Actually, there was an "E" change too.

EDIT EDIT: I looked. The changes involved the intake manifold and reed plate, the bypass cover, and the shifter lock.
