Hey guys :)

been wondering what year my boat motor is for a while. I have been told lots of different tihngs by different marine mechanics.

One marine mechanic thinks its definately 1979, other thinks early 70's and may even be 50/55hp. Another thinks early 80's?

I want to know for sure because I need to service it in the next month and I need to buy the right impeller.

And for a boat motor newbie, can you please point me in the right direction for the lower unit oil that this motor would require oh as well as spark plugs.

thanks fellas appreciate it,
cheers

EDIT:

I would be able to find the year myself but the "info / compliance" plate is missing, hence the reason im on here looking for help :p
I can tell you the serial number though: A0100289 If that helps?
thanks

3-bolted coils indicates 79 or earlier, however they did not have a 2 cyl 60, but 55 at that time. Most likely a Frankenstein engine - built together by several different mod years. The color of the powerhead indicates a replacement power head, only primed and not painted.

mate i think your 100% right. Went looking on youtube for late 70's 55hp evinrudes and mine is practically identical. To save my self the hassle i'll take the old impeller down to the local marine shop so i can get an identical one.

Now i have the spark plugs sorted out, could you tell me what oil to use for the gearbox?

thanks heaps,
much appreciated

Any 'Hi-Vis' outboard gearbox oil provided it has manual mechanical shift!! (no electrical wires going down to the gear box)
Being a Frankenstein difficult to say what is hidden around????

No question about it, the hood is a 1982. But it obviously doesn't belong on that motor because it is the wrong color. Or is everything just faded that badly? To further complicate things, it is an Australian-built motor. We know that by the "A" in the serial number. May or may not be same as U.S. models.

Nah your right, everything is faded pretty badly, i think its the wrong cowling for the motor, could that explain why i have to struggle getting it on?
Can take me a good couple minutes to get it on and line it up right haha. And your right it is an Australian motor, so yeah is getting a bit confusing. I called a local marine mechanic and he said to bring the gearcase down to him so he can get me the right impeller. So all set :)

And you see how the paint all over is bad, its because the owner before me used $2 spray paint and just went all over it. I want to sand it all back, prime it then paint it with nice fresh paint.

Any idea on what sort of primer to use? And then again which kind of paint?

thanks fellas

Look under the lifting hook on top, and there may be a round plug with the model number on it. It looks like a freeze plug.
