Hi everyone my first time here and new to boats. Im looking at a 1992 Cobia 18 ft, 115 Yamaha, not sure on the model.
Need more info is it a Monte Carlo?
Where can i decode the vin to see if its original?
How much is it worth?
Does this thing a paint job or can the Gel coat be shined or polished up?

Really think we need some pictures.

An 18' with a 115 should be decent package. Your BIGGEST concern is going to be rot in the wooden components of the hull. You want a solid deck and transom. ANY soft spots are usually indicative of more serious rot in the stringers below. These things are repairable but it's quite a job and the materials aren't exactly cheap.

Thanks, I thought this boat manufacturer didnt use wood or is that on some pf the newer models? Will post pics later today. What is the best way to check for wood rot?

I think in '92 the wood-free manufacturers were pretty few and far between. Check the deck carefully for soft spots (walk around every inch). See if you can get a look at the transom from the inside and see how the wood looks. Push down hard on the motor while it's tilted up and look for any flex.

What's with that large unfinished area in the stern? That boat is pretty ragged out. Only real value is the motor and trailer.

Re: 1992 Cobia ??

Since we're basing this on pics: The transom appears to have an exposed section of wood, which appears wet.

Thus, the answer to one posted question is: Not worth much as a hull. Find something better.

Now comes the back and forth as the buyer wants to convince himself and us why it's ok. Also, now the iBoaters who love to fix rotted transoms. :)

EDIT: Upon 'closer' inspection, it would appear the transom has such an odd appearance because someone probably tried to do something (lawd knows what) to it. Probaly a tell-tale sign of trouble right there.

Next.
