There is oil leaking at the prop. I took off the prop and confirmed the oil leak. I assume it must be lower unit oil. The lower unit has not been hit - prop and skeg are mint.

Before I have a mechanic look at it, I would like to know......

(A) what is the probable source of the leak and
(B) can i fix it myself.

Thank in Advance

A - possibly o-ring. Also could be just leftover 2cycle oil.
B - depends. Not an easy job for a first timer with the o-ring.

Sometimes fishing line gets wrapped around the prop and winds it's way up to the o-ring and cuts it.
Best thing to do is check to see if there's any water in the L/U oil. This will be a definite sign of a bad seal.

Re: oil leak

Smell the oil resdue If it is gear oil it will stink like sulfer, and you have an issue. If it smells like gas or oil, it is normal and you likely have no problem.
