white smoke, white smoke, white smoke, brown smoke

Hello all, I have twin 1995 Johnsons 200's and my port side when running or hooked up to hose will blow white smoke several times and then a puff of brown/black smoke (no white smoke). My other engine is normal and does not have near the white smoke the port side does (it clouds up the area). Also I have VRO and the port (problem) side burns substantially more oil. If anyone can help and maybe save me a few bucks I would appreciate it. Thanks

Not familiar with your engine but normally white smoke is caused by water in the cylinders. Best of luck. Rick.

Do a compression test on all cylinders...maybe head gasket?

Compression check turned out fine on all cylinders, the smoke is bluish color like 2 stroke color, My problem is the brown puff that is coming out and the excessive oil its using on that engine. I am going to de-carb it today and see if that helps.

is your oil tank vented right? double check that otherwise it'll force more oil in when it heats up.

I will check the ventilation, but would that just be that cap i remove to put the oil in. When i unscrew it i hear pressure releasing.

She's just running really really rich, white then black means excessive fuel/oil and eventual carbon buildup then a carbon blow out and back to white. Sounds like you have fuel delivery issue. Not sure if it's injected or carb'd. If its's carbed I'd suspect a stuck float, if it's injected then maybe a bad MAP sensor.

That might explain it, I just had all six carbs rebuilt. And it didnt seem to smoke this bad previously. Another guy told me that its the VRO about to go out. He said generally the pump excessive fuel before they fail. Not sure on that. But I will see about the float issue.

Two possible causes: a loose fuel supply clamp causing a air leak aerating fuel (Vro pumps faster = more oil than fuel) or the problem I see most with pumps using E-10 fuels is the oil piston o-ring drags causing the pump to "short stroke" which really throws off ratio. Both problems have the same symptom, rapid clicking of VRO pump.....

Now that you mention it and FB expained it, it makes sense but having the carbs recently rebuilt would also make me wonder. I'd check them both if you can rule out the VRO then it's probably a carb problem.

I decarbonized the engine, both direct into carbs and into chambers over night and what a difference. Maybe it did have a stuck float and maybe the decarb spray fixed it, not sure. but it is night and day. Thanks to all who helped and also thanks to Seahorse and Sal for posting the decarb procedure they use.
