Welcome to iboats!

If it's clicking, the solenoid is engaging.

First thing you need to do is get that bendix free so it goes up and down smoothly. Clean the shaft and lightly lube it. You should be able to turn it up without it binding. When you let it go it should drop back down. You can test the solenoid by jumping the big wires on it. Just because it clicks does not mean its good as the contacts inside can burn and not make good contact.

I've heard you shouldn't lube the starter shaft or bendix as it makes it more likely to accumulate dirt and grim..? Also, I agree with bhile, test it with wires, but just in my experience clicking has been good. Completely possible I am wrong. :)

A light lube will not hurt anything. Yes clicking is good. However, there are copper contacts inside that burn over time and will not make good contact.

Re: 1995 Johnson Starter or solonoid

I had a simular problem earlier in the summer. Turned out that the starter needed to be taken apart, brushes replaced and all contacts cleaned; but the biggest problem I think was my main power cables were corroded internally, I replaced them and man what a big difference. I think my moter will start with a half charged battery now. But before I got to the starter and the cables I had replaced the solonoid and cleaned every contact between the battery and the starter more than once.
