When I engage the throttle on my mercury 150 xri outboard the overflow starts squirting fuel. What is the cause of this? This is my first boat.

Overflow? Do you mean the gastank vent on the side of the boat?

On the boat or air plenum on engine? If engine it a sticking fuel pressure regulator or VST flooding..

A Xri is a fuel injected engine and has no carb. The VST tank has a couple of vent hoses attached to air plenum and elbow has a small hole in it, If fuel is coming from hole the VST is flooding

Ok, My guess is VST stands for Vapour Separator Tank, is like an auxilary float bowl and is there to prevent vapour lock and percolation problems.

That sounds like it. What causes this to flood

Debris under needle on inlet float, swollen needle due to E-10 fuel or hung/stuck/heavy float
