(I had posted about this in the propeller subforum, MODS feel free to strike me with an oar if needed, sorry.)

Anyhow- I have a 2 blade prop with only one blade left on it (courtesy of a submerged log), and I cannot fish.

I've been told that a prop from any 5.5 or 6HP Evinrude motor from 1954- 1965 will work. I need to know if this is true.

I'm also wondering if I have any options of using a Johnson prop?

Many thanks to anyone that can help me figure this out.

I believe both of those statements are true. You could compare part numbers on the BRP website to be sure.

I have the parts manual for the '66 6hp (6602) and the part # for the prop is 380958 and it is a 8 x 7.25 prop. I'm pretty sure it is the same as the '65.

Well.....yes and maybe no. It is true that the prop shaft was similar for those years. It was changed with the 1966 model year. However, you might find that some of the older props will interfere at the bearing head if you try to use them. If it slips on all the way and you can get the drive pin in, it is ok.

The original prop for your motor was part number 376968 and was 8" x 7-1/4", two blade. It probably has been superseded half a dozen times since then.

Ah, I'm glad FR had the '65 part #. I looked up the Evinrude 5.5's back to '57 and they are all the same part # 376968.

And I just looked up the Johnson ones and they are also the same back to '57 but are a different part # in '56 and before.

OK, so I checked the books to make sure I was telling the truth. Indeed, 1966 was the year of change. Up through 1965, the drive pin was through the aft end of the hub, with a rubber cap. 1966-up had the drive pin forward of the hub, with a threaded cap nut. In addition, 1966-up had the rubber shock hub, 1965-back did not have a rubber hub, but a shock absorber in the gearcase.

Without beating this to death, 1956 probably was the year they started using the longer gearcase head & bearing assy.

Re: Propeller options for 1965 Evinrude 6HP (6502)

Thank you all!

I've searched all over for a prop... with disappointing results.

Well, I did manage to find one brand new OEM prop, but its outside my price range, I need both arms to fish with. :)

Seems I stumbled across a Mighigan Wheel once before ...found it !
SKU:#012005
Manufacturer: Michigan Wheel
Brand: Michigan Match
Material: Aluminum
Diameter: 8?
Pitch: 7-1/4?
Blades: 2
Rotation: Standard (Clockwise)

Any of you guys ever used one of these aftermarket props on these "vintage" motors before - would this work with the pin? Everything on this outboard is OEM, I'd feel kinda odd using something aftermarket...

Thanks guys I found a prop from a 1963 Johnson CD20 (5.5HP)

It is a 2 blade 8 x 7 1/4

Should be a match, right?
