tilt / trim up clicking

I have a 1990 merc 4.3 l with alpha 1 drive
Tilt / trim issue:
trim up works only after repeated tries - tilt up does not work
trim down works fine , tilt down works fine

when pressing tilt or trim up solonoid clicks

which wiring diagram for a 4 button tilt / trim?
where are solonoids located?
motor and reservoir are behind seat on rear port side

There usually on a plate mounted near the pump. If one solenoid is bad repplace them both. The other one is not far behind. Same thing on mind. Multiple clicks until it decided it was ready to work. No problems anymore.

Just had the same problem...installed a new solenoid and works great. While I was in and around the trim unit I also went ahead and disconnected/brushed/greased ALL of the electrical connection including the ground on the trim pump.

Not sure of the number.. Any marine dealer has them in stock though. Very common item. Did you verify the solenoid being the culprit?

Just had the same issue....trim up clicked intermittently, down work fine. I used the troubleshooting guide and it pointed to a bad solenoid.

I called Sierra (1-877-663-8396) tech support, gave them my outdrive SN, and they told me the Sierra part #. I got it from my local NAPA dealer, around $20.

There will be 2 solenoids, one on top of the other. The top one should be the trim up.

When replacing them, go very slowly and note which wire(s) goes where. I only took off one wire at a time and connected it to the new solenoid as I went. Otherwise, you'll have to get a wiring diagram and chase down the wires.....not fun.

Clean all the connections and use some dielectric grease.

agree with bags.........just did this early this year...they dont give u alot of room to work...but in the end its all worth it

Wire colours are easy. Anything RED is main power, anything BLACK is a ground, anything BLUE is for the up circuit and anything GREEN is for the DOWN circuit.... You might find a purple/white in there, that's for the trim limit switch....
