1959 johnson manual shifter problems

Hello, I have a 10 hp 1959 johnson outboard that I have rebuilt. I almost have everything working great, but I was trying to shift it the other day while off from neutral, to forward, then reverse. I turn the motor handle into shift mode then on the side of the motor push the lever into the gear I want. Sometimes, the lever will not go completely into forward, unless if I really force it. Other times it will not completely go into reverse and once again I have to force the lever to go into reverse. It is never both at the same time, it's either one or the other. Any advice will be appreciated.

I hope you are only shifting with engine running! If shifting with engine NOT running, you may end up braking something expensive.

The clutch dog engages the rotating gears "on the fly". If they are not rotating, it simply may not move into the space it has to catch. If you want to shift it while not running, turn the prop shaft and it should go into gear.

As haffman said, you may bend or break something by forcing it. Then you can come back and ask the next question.
