Can anybody give me some info. for the upgraded shift detent lever for my OMC 1989 cobra drive?
My manual shows part number 323946 for the shift detent lever.
But during my research I am finding a updated lever # 915954.
Can anybody tell me why the new lever is better than the old lever?
I was told the new lever has the ramps cut different making shifting easier and OMC recommended replacing all the old levers with the new ones for this reason.
Is this correct?
Thanks

Why are you replacing the lever?

I am having the drive opened up to check the gears and bearings and resealed.
So as long as the drive is opened I figured that would be a good time to install the updated shift lever.

That is correct. Apparently, the new lever is designed to help the clutch dog stay in gear better. OMC went to great expense to "solve" the shifting problem that caused so many drives to 'eat' their clutch sets. OMC redesigned their clutch dogs, only to discover later that the real problem was with the lower shift cable and sensitive adjustments required.
