#1 is the front cylinder. As far as which one it is on the cap, if the distributor has been pulled and put back in, it could be anywhere. Put the engine at TDC on the compression stroke and then see where the rotor is pointing too. Just remember that it is important to put the engine on the compression stroke. If you are 360? off you will be on the exhaust stroke at TDC.
