I have a 1991 40 hp Johnson Tracker that won't start. I've tried alot of things. New battery, gapped plugs to .030, checked spark (seems fine), checked fuel being pumped to carbs at the carbs (nice flow), removed carbs and took bowls off (very clean inside), tried starting fluid directly in to intake (without carbs). Nothing I've tried has given any indication of starting. Compression is 145 on both. Stumped!

You need to check for spark. Could be a bad cdi or coils.

Are the plugs wet after you try to start it? I'm betting that the jets are clogged with varnish. You need to disassemble them and soak in carb cleaner and blow out all passages with compressed air. Just because you took the bowls off and it looked clean doesn't mean anything.

After alot of checking this and that, I was talking with a mechanic and asking all kinds of questions. The last one was;"Does it matter which plug wire is on which cylinder?" Well, DUH! It fired right up and runs like a scalded dog! YEEEEHAAAA!!!! Thanks for the input though.
