Fiberglassing in a Transom

Looking for some direction on how many layers of fiberglass normally goes on the inside transom after replacing it with new ply. The boat is a 1989 Glastron 19ft I/O with 130hp merc engine and merc alpha one outdrive. I pulled the old transom out and have installed the new transom. I am in the process of glassing in the new transom. I have two layers of glass on it now. The glass extended beyond transom for approx 3in.

What Resin and Glass are you using. Typically when using Poly resin, I recommend 1 layer of 1.5 oz CSM followed by two layers of 1708 Biaxial Cloth. Overlaps should be 3-6-9 inches progressively.

Did you get the thickness of your old transom? It needs to be the same thickness. I beleive its, 2's trues. So built it up to 2 inches thick.

Thanks for the responses. I am using epoxy resin and 1708 Biaxial fiberglass. The thickness of the transom was 2in. I am now at 2in. Do you think I should add one more layer and have it 6in out?

you want two inches......if you have only one layer of 1708 on there.....and you are at 2 inches....you are done.....with epoxy you can get away with it......but poly i would suggest 2 layers.

you might add more 1708 as tabbing but stay away from the drive hole

I agree with OOPS. With epoxy, you should be good to go.
