Hard shifting

I recently purchased a 1991 sanger and it has a 5.7 mercruiser in it and took it out today and it was shifting into gear, forward and reverse hard. I also noticed the neutral idle was sometimes climbing to 1900 rpms. It has a new transmission and carburetor. I think it could be the high rpm's. Any thoughts? I also notice when trying to pull a skier out of the water when i hammer it down it hesitates then engages.

What is your normal warm engine idle rpm sitting at now?

After starting and running for a while and stopping, when I start it back up it climbs to around 1800 to 1900 rpms, I guess I should say that I bought the boat from a lower altitude area than what I'm at.

Pull the accelerator linkage off the carb after it is warmed up so that the idle speed screw is fully in contact with the idle cam. With the cable removed what is your rpm's. You may need to preload your cable.

Thanks for the help. I had to extend the cable untill it contacted the idle screw and was able to adjust the idle. hopefully will be able to get it on the water soon.

Yup 1800 rpms are too high for putting it in gear. Adjust the warm engine to be 750 or so in neutral. That should fall to 650 or 675 rpm in forward gear.
