Changing out motors 1983 for 1996 Merc 150 HP Outboard

I have a 1989 Maverick flats boat that had a 1996 150 HP Merc outboard. This motor blew up. I found a 1983 Merc 150 HP outboard that was in great shape and decided to pick it up and use it in my boat. Now I wonder if I've made a mistake. The hydraulic steering on the '96 looks different from the '83. It appears to be manual steering on the '83. What do I need to do to change out these motors? Thanks for any responses.

I would think that steering will work. I replaced my '77 Merc 1500 with a '93 Merc 135HPV6, and had no steering issues. I had a Teleflex R&P steering system. The only difference may be wiring and bolt holes for the transom clamps.
