DF-40 Stuck lower unit

My lower unit will not separate from the engine so I can change my water pump. The gear shaft is disconnected but I can only get it down about an eighth of an inch.:confused:

Like Brannen on his DF-40, I'm trying to remove the lower unit on my '03 DF-25 (3 cyl, 4-stroke if that matters) to change out the water pump parts.

Brannen can get his down about 1/8" .. I can't get mine even that far. This engine is new to me & I'm guessing it's been awhile since the impeller has been changed out. The paint on the gear case bolts hadn't even been wrenched off!

So what's the next step for Brannen and me? We'll sure appreciate any suggestions.
