15 hp two stroke sparking

My 1991 15 hp merc two stroke is making a sparking noise when running that is causing it to surge and stutter. It sounds like it's coming from the port side 'black box'. Any ideas what this could be? Thanks

Well I figured it out myself! Both coils had cracks in them and were shorting to ground causing the rough running. Thanks fn
