CDI Electronics school... have you been there?

It happens that I live about a two hours drive from CDI in Madison, AL. They have an electronics class, I assume, every winter. I was raised in an automobile repair shop which is the only tech school I've ever attended and pretty much can work on about anything... and actually make most things work, run, function fairly normally and sometimes better than new. Jus' wunner'n if any of you guys have been to CDI's clinics/schools? Is it all it's cracked up to be or am I just as well off reading a book, not spending the $400 plus motel bill??? I'm quite sure that in February I'll have the time, not so sure about the money.... Basically, I live on a very popular lake and do lots of handyman work and plumbing and work on my own boats which I have a yard full of old junkers. I just kinda figure that if I've got proof that I know something about working on boats, a piece of paper on the wall, I might can actually make a few bucks doing outboard repairs. I've built and repaired a gazillion of my own and several for friends & relatives and actually got paid for working on a few.

Thanks... now I'm questioning whether or not to join AMTECH so that I can get a discount and opportunities to go to other schools... I've learned tons from hanging out on iboats, mastertech, marineengines, and other forums. But, new electronics are still a mystery to me.

go to the school, it covers more than even the factory training centers, plus you get all the engine's electronic training, not just one brand.

AM-TECH is a great organization and has an annual Marine Service Expo in Florida each January with even more courses you can take.

Why not ask them what it covers ? I f you are up to speed on testing CDI then you dont need that but it might cover computer controls on outboards and you may find that useful.

From what I've read about it... it starts with basic electronics and covers a wide range of testing & diagnosis from simple stuff, pretty much all kinds of ignition & fuel system electonics, EFI, and more. I've got a bud that lives in Madison so may not even have to get a motel...

Maybe it's good news. We've done a few good jobs lately and are in fair financial shape. So, today I made the phone call and registered myself AND my son for the school. The first class already is full so we will be going to the 2nd class which will be next week. I'm expecting to learn a lot and excited that my son is interested and will be there with me... kind of a gamble but I've got confidence that this is going to pay off really good.
