What do you plan to hunt and what is your price range? Have you shot it off a bench? How accurate is it and can you get any kind of group out of it? If it shoots slop at close range, it will be even worse at a 100+ yds. Good luck.

I've got a Ruger .243 - Love RUGERS! I just wish their semi-auto handguns weren't so big and klunky.

I've got a Bushnell scope on it ... old un'. Mine is dialed in at 100 yds, but I've shot competitively at 200 yds with it. My dad also used to shoot bench rest competitions with it - set up as it currently is.

Could bump your budget a "little" and go with the Barrett BORS system: http://www.barrett.net/optics/bors :D

I would get a 3-9 or a 2-7 with at lease a 50 mm objective. Bright and variable. It low power you will still be able to see at dusk and crank it up for the longshots.

The Ruger mini 14 is not a long range gun so they should suit you fine.

I purchase quite a bit from MidwayUSA and they have very good customer service along with great prices.

For under $75 I'd look at gun/pawn shops for a quality used scope. 2-7 power w/40 mm bell. Hogs I've hunted weren't at what I'd call long range. I have a 3.5-10 50mm scope on a 270 and like it, but I think it would be a bit bulky on a Mini. Have fun.

I would not use a .223 on a 200-300# critter that has a bad attitude and the ability to ruin your day big time. Minimum .243 or 6MM Rem.

I think I would want a .45-70 for pigs, but I am at least 50 years obsolete  and won't use a scope.

I hear you on small caliber, actually for hogs, my 1920 303 Enfield (w/ 18" bayonet), 308 Mauser, would do nicely. Maybe 223 for deer one day. :) I also don't shoot scoped, years ago had one on my 22 AR7, worked great.

I wouldn't use a 223 for deer. 243 minimum. I'm not a fan of high velocity, light weight bullets for large animals. Also there are magazine restrictions for big game. Personally, I've used a 30-06 on hogs with 100% success.

For that 500 pounder, I would use my Pedersoli 45-120 Sharps!! (535gr Postell, 115gr "F")

.223 for groundhogs or coyotes. .308win is my fav. medium game caliber. Works well at close and long range w soft pointed bullets and recoil is light. If your shooting hogs w a 223 you better unload the gun on them! or shootem in the eye! another vote for the 3x7. I like Nikons optics, bright, sharp, and relitively inexpensive. I bought a display model ( they were sold out) at Dicks SG, 20 percent off and still guaranteed and I love it.

I don't like scopes except for varmits. I certainly wouldn't put one on a mini 14 at 100 yards. For hogs, how about a .338?

I believe it's BSA that make a scope specifically calibrated for the .223's drop at a given range. Maybe called the Sweet 223? I'm at work or i'd Google it for ya...pressing my luck on this forum as is....
