Hi I have a johnson 115 etl77s & when i use my choke switch it blows the in line fuse which kills the starter circuit. I have 0 ohms reading on the 2wires on the solinoid.does this mean that it is U/S

Most likely the solenoid shorts to ground when activated, or you have put in wrong fuse size?

That's a common problem over the years. If you have two hot wires coming out of the choke solenoid, then someone left the key on for quite a while and one set of windings shorted out with the heat buildup. Years back there was a bulletin about rewiring the solenoid and getting rid of the automatic "half choke" setup that was original from the factory.

If you have 0 ohms when checking the wires going to it, the solenoid is shorting out causing the fuse to blow.

LotsaQ's...... As a follow up to your problem.

Temporarily remove the engine wiring harness Purple/White wire from the terminal strip at the engine. Key ON, push engage the choke. This is a test to see if the wire itself is shorted out. If the fuse did not blow, the wire itself is okay.

If you have more than one wire attached to the "C" terminal of the ignition switch, that would create a problem. The only wire there should be the Purple/White one.

Seahorse5..... The 1977 115hp model did not have the Purple/White-Purple/Yellow two wire thermo actuated choke setup.

do you know the correct fuse size as this is a possibility?

Thanks i did this test & the fuse doesn't blow, so the problem is defiantly in the solenoid side of the circuit

My solenoid only has two wires 1 is the earth & the other is a purple/white which connected to the terminal strip

Is anything else connected to that terminal strip besides the other purple/white wire? It seems strange that you have the same problem with two solenoids. I'd repeat the previous test, but this time disconnect the solenoid from the terminal strip, leaving the plug connected. If it only blows when the solenoid is connected, then ok you have a shorted solenoid.

BTW, what kind of ohm meter are you using? Unless it can tell the difference between zero ohms and say one or two ohms, it won't do you much good.

Re: when I use my choke it blows my starter fuse 115etl77s

Sorry guys for not replying to your valued help but i have been away with work for some time & haven't had any playtime,I have had this problem resolved, turns out had a number of problems here the main fuse to the starter solenoid was only 10 amp,the second hand choke solenoid was also faulty, turns out the ohms reading across the coil should be 6-8 ohms, spent 1 hour back at the wreckers testing through a box of them to find one in the right range, much to the surprise of the supplier, came home & just finished putting it all together & now works like a charm.
So once again thanks for all your help & I'm off fishing as it is a great day outside today
