It has sufficient power to obtain a speed that will allow the majority or the hull to ride on top of the water rather than drag it's bulk through the water. The chines are designed for stability when planing.

Most small pleasure craft are planing hulls but there are numerous sub-categories.

Aldo

V-hull, planing. The planing part means that the hull is designed to rise partially out of the water and run on top of it, with minimal friction and drag. The opposite would be a displacemnet hull which only cuts through or "parts" the water and remains completly in the water. Think of your type of boat compared to a cruise ship or aircrft carrier.....get the idea ?

Re: Hull Type

Right. So as far as a 'performance' hull goes, I know this is a pleasure boat, but if a speed boat was a 10, and a john boat was a 1, where would mine fall on a scale of 1-10?

Is there a diagram anywhere with different hull types so I could learn them?
