I have a 1989 Evinrude on my pontoon boat and it will not shift into gear. After some research I determined that it was a plastic piece called the bushing and rod keeper. There is a pin that goes through the shift rod and hooks into this piece. I got the part, but could use some assistance on how to change it. Any help would be appreciated.

Se below diagram:

Remove clip #87, and push in the shift shaft to free from vertical shift rod. Remove screw #26.
Remove #12 and unhook #90 from the shift shaft. Pull the shaft to STB and out of the bushing/keeper. If not enough space to STB (lower cover), you may have to lift off the power head.

Thanks, As I looked at your instructions I may have over thought my problem. The shift rod has slipped off of the pin which is why the engine will ot go in gear. If I get the rod back on the Pin, what will keep it there? (cotter pin?)
