I removed the power head and the shift rod came out with it. I need to know the correct position for the shift rod to be in, when installing the new power head.

I recommend you remove the gearcase before attempting to install the powerhead. It is too hard to try to line up the driveshaft with the crankshaft. It will be real easy to ruin the splines on the driveshaft or crank, or both.

Once you get the powerhead installed, make sure the gearcase is in neutral, the control is in neutral, and then install the gearcase. it is much easier to mate the driveshaft and shift shafts.
