I have an older 6 cylinder 115 outboard. Sitting on the trailer, I can adjust it to shift into and out of gear just fine, and it appears to operate as one would expect. However, when I put it in the water, it won't go into gear. It is almost like something is floating on the inside, and raising the gears out of position or changing the adjustment somehow. But, this process doesn't make any sense to me, but I have no other explanation. I've adjusted it to both extremes, where it goes completely into forward and barely into reverse, and the opposite. that doesn't appear to affect it - - when you put it in water, it won't hook up. Ideas?
